Swiss Say Emission-Reduction Goals Achievable Through Existing Policies

Switzerland can achieve its greenhouse gas emission reduction goals by continuing and strengthening existing policy measures, according to the Swiss government. In a report released Jan. 22, the Federal Council said the legally mandated target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent from 1990 levels by 2020 can be met through the "targeted reinforcement" of measures already in place, including further increases in Switzerland's existing carbon tax on fuels. These emissions can be further reduced by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2050 if these policies are carried forward, added the Federal Council, the Swiss government's executive arm.
