Report Finds Identifying PBT Chemicals For Regulation Hindered by Inconsistency

The number of chemicals that could be classified as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic is likely to be greater than previously thought, and their regulation is held back by knowledge gaps and inconsistent cutoff values, according to a report published by the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. The analysis of chemicals on three continents, which was highlighted at a Dec. 4 workshop in Brussels, said recent screening has shown that up to 1,000 industrial chemicals might qualify for PBT classification.
