Bill Gates Unveils $2 Billion Plan at Paris Climate Talks to Develop Green Technologies

Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates, flanked by U.S. President Ba-rack Obama, unveiled Nov. 30 an ambitious plan to create a coalition of private investors, governments, and research institutions to spend billions of dollars to help confront climate change via renewable energy projects. Obama was among the leaders from 20 countries that agreed to double research and development spending on clean energy technologies, called the Breakthrough Energy Coalition. The University of California system, with 10 campuses and two national-class research laboratories, will help carry out the research, and Gates is among 28 individuals who have so far pledged at least $2 billion to help fund the projects, he said in Paris.
