The Swedish government has commissioned a study into how it could introduce a tax on air travel that would reduce the aviation industry's carbon footprint and lower the impact on the climate, the tax agency announced Nov. 5. Aviation plays a major role in growth and jobs in Sweden, "not least for the parts that are far from urban areas," the announcement said. With its goal to become one of the world's first fossil-free welfare countries, the tax agency said it was "therefore reasonable to investigate how air travel can carry a larger share of the cost of their greenhouse gas emissions."
