Norway's 2016 Budget Plan Will Boost Environmental Technologies, Ministry Says

Norway plans to ramp up investments in climate-friendly technologies and increase research allocations in the new year, the Environment Ministry said. In an Oct. 7 statement detailing Norway's 2016 budget, the ministry said the budget places a strong focus on measures to boost green technologies and green energy and includes targeted tax adjustments. Proposed measures include allocating 524 million Norwegian krone ($64.4 million) to compensate industries for higher electricity prices due to the European Union emissions trading system and an additional 270 million Norwegian krone to purchase United Nations-approved climate quotas; introducing new funding to promote green energy initiatives, including an existing pilot program for biogas plants; and setting aside 80 million Norwegian krone more to develop a full-scale carbon dioxide capture and treatment demonstration project.
