Brazil's Congress has approved a bill, expected to be signed into law, that would create a national policy to combat desertification and to mitigate the effects of drought in the country's arid northeastern region. Brazil's Senate approved the bill (No.70/2007) July 8, after the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Congress, passed it in February. President Dilma Rousseff, a supporter of the bill, is expected to sign it into law by the end July, Sen. Otto Alencar, the bill's sponsor in the Senate, told Bloomberg BNA.
