U.N.-Linked Agency Cites Cancer Risks For Five Organophosphate Pesticides

A United Nations-linked specialized agency for cancer research classified two widely used organophosphate pesticides as likely causes of cancer in humans and three other organophosphates as either likely or possible causes, based on a yearlong evaluation of recent data. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said, based on "substantial" data that recently became available, it has classified the herbicide glypho-sate and the insecticides malathion and diazinon as "probably carcinogenic to humans." The agency, linked to the UN World Health Organization, also classified the insecticides tetrachlorvinphos and parathion as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" in its report, released March 20. All five pesticides are based on organic esters of phosphoric acid.
