South Australia Studies Storing Radioactive Waste, Possibility off Adopting Nuclear Power

The South Australian government has launched an independent inquiry into the merits of hosting radioactive waste disposal facilities and building what would be the nation's first nuclear power plants. The state government in Adelaide March 19 released terms of reference for the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission, which will report by next May. South Australia has 80 percent of Australia's known recoverable uranium reserves, and the Royal Commission also will examine whether to expand uranium ore exploration, mining, milling and processing activities. Terms of reference require the government to examine the economic, environmental and social risks and opportunities associated with each activity in the nuclear fuel cycle.
