China Directs State-Owned Enterprises To Shore Up Chemical Safety

China warned state-owned companies that they must ensure safe production, use, transport and storage of hazardous chemicals in light of major incidents during the first half of the year, the State Council said on its website. According to a June 29 State Administration of Work Safety report, 11 large hazardous chemical accidents occurred between January and June, killing 32 people. Three accidents were in Hebei province, which surrounds Beijing, and two others took place in Shandong province. Most of the accidents were at state-owned enterprises, "indicating that there are still weaknesses and loopholes in work related to production, storage and use of hazardous chemicals," the State Council said.
