Canada is proposing more stringent air pollution standards for small, gas-powered engines that would align with U.S. rules and reduce Canadian emissions of smog-forming air pollutants, the government said. The tougher rules would primarily apply to engines in non-handheld lawn care products such as lawnmow-ers, garden tractors and snowblowers, light industrial equipment including mobile generators, welders and pressure washers and light-duty logging machines, including chainsaws, log splitters and shredders. As many as 2 million such engines currently enter the Canadian market annually, the government said. The regulatory changes would also impose, for the first time in Canada, standards for air pollutants from the evaporation of fuel from engines in both handheld and non-handheld machines that would also align with those in the U.S.
