Canada's Crude-by-Rail Liability Insurance Requirement to Begin for Major Carriers

Canada's new requirements that railways transporting significant volumes of crude oil and other dangerous goods must carry at least C$1 billion ($760 million) in liability insurance will take effect June 18, the government announced. The first liability provisions of the Safe and Accountable Rail Act (Bill C-52) to take effect will cover major railways carrying more than 1.5 million metric tons of crude oil per year or more than 50,000 metric tons of other substances that pose a toxic inhalation hazard, Transport Canada said in a notice published May 18 in the Canada Gazette, Part Ⅱ (38 INER 290, 3/11/15).
