China's Coastal Rivers, Streams Fail to Meet Acceptable National Water Standards

More than 90 percent of freshwater river and streams that flow into China's coastal waters failed to meet acceptable national water quality standards last year, the government announced. And 60 percent of shellfish sampled near these outlets failed to meet water quality standards, with elevated levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium and petroleum hydrocarbons detected in many specimens, according to an annual survey released March 22 by the State Oceanic Administration.
