Despite the huge ingenuity and extensive resources which have been employed in the creation of offshore oil and gas platforms, sooner or later they will have to cease production. While it may not have the glamour of deepwater development, as the general global consensus is that abandonment to the forces of nature or dumping at sea are no longer acceptable options, all operators must address their responsibility to ensure that the removal of their assets offshore is scrutinised with the same rigor as when they were initially constructed.
