For the first time, China will place a cap on its annual energy consumption to encourage energy saving. In the draft outline of the 13th Five-year Plan on national economy and social development released in March 2016, China revealed its plans to cap total consumption of standard coal at 5 billion tonnes by 2020, and to reduce its energy consumption per unit of GDP by 15 per cent by 2020. According to official data retrieved from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the total energy consumption in 2015 amounted to 4.3 billion tonnes of standard coal equivalent, which was an increase of 0.9 per cent from 2014.
