Six years ago it seemed that Beirut, the setting for a decade-and-a-half-long hopelessly complicated civil war, might yet emerge phoenix-like from the ruins of a city that was once so prosperous that it was known as the 'Switzerland of the Middle East'. However, with Israel's bombs threatening the peace of Lebanon, it seems that six years of peace and reconstruction may have been forgotten almost overnight. Doubts are now being raised about the forthcoming UK trade mission to Lebanon, which was designed to underline the continuing opportunities arising from the war-battered country's reconstruction. However, if peace is maintained, it will mean good news for both Beirut and British business.
