Optimism in the USA

The US economy is reported to be in its strongest position since the early 1960s, despite falling exports due to the Asian recession. "Optimism remains high in the construction industry in the USA," observed Ronald DeFeo, 1998 Chairman for the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association (CIMA) and also Chairman of the Board for Terex Corporation. "The favourable six-year re-authorization of US federal aid to transportation accounts for much of this, but continued low interest rates and a stable economy have kept other markets going." In a recent poll of CIMA members, the majority of survey respondents saw rising demand for their products as compared with the same time period last year. This opinion is especially significant because the members of CIMA represent all kinds of equipment used in construction and not just the machinery for one segment.
