One of the most challenging river crossings in the world is now close to completion. The 5km-long Jamuna Bridge (reported in IC July 1997) will open for road and rail traffic this July. The mighty Brahmaputra river is known locally in Bangladesh as the Jamuna. This World Bank project has required civil and hydraulic engineering works on an epic scale. The Jamuna is a wide river and runs north-south, bisecting Bangladesh. The bridge is of strategic importance as it will be the first fixed transport link connecting the eastern and western zones of the country. As well as road and rail traffic, it will also carry power and other services across the river.
