When complete, the 24 km Second Penang Bridge in Malaysia will be the longest bridge in southeast Asia, connecting Batu Kawan on the mainland to Seberang Perai and Batu Maung on Penang Island. The MYR 4.5 billion (US$ 1.5 billion) structure is being built with a development loan from China, and the main contractor is a joint venture between Chinese Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and local company United Engineers Malaysia Berhad (UEM) Group. Piling work was carried out using two CGL370 hydraulic piling hammers from BSP International. Each was fitted with a 25 tonne ramweight and was operated at a maximum stroke of 1.5 m and a blow rate of between 32 and 75 blows per minute.
