If you believe everything you read in the media, you might be surprised to learn that some of the world's most innovative, challenging and forward-thinking construction projects are currently underway in North Africa. Setting aside the much-publicised Suez Canal expansion, the government of Egypt has even bigger plans afoot. Recently, a memorandum of understanding was signed with China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), requesting it work with Egyptian companies in the creation of a new administrative centre, to the east of existing capital Cairo. With a five-to-seven-year timescale and an estimated total cost of US$ 80 billion, it is anticipated the new city will house 5 million people in more than a million new homes, to relieve overcrowding in Cairo.
