"A year ago, North Africa was dropping off the charts in terms of US corn sales," said US Grains Council President and CEO Tom Sleight. "But this year, Egypt may take more corn than China, and Morocco and Tunisia are again buying US Corn." For the current marketing year from the beginning of September 2013 through to May 15, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco have taken a combined 2.1m tonnes of US corn, compared with nothing in the same period in the previous marketing year. His comments followed his return from the region, where he met importers, end-users and USGC staff to assess the situation. The crisis in Ukraine is obviously part of the explanation for the recovery in US sourcing, but other factors are at work as well.
