When it comes to the relative importance of the war in Iraq, possible misleading of Parliament and the death of civil servants, the broadcasting industry is really not that big a deal. However, it would be a shame to think that the current controversy that the BBC is mired in totally eclipses a very significant piece of news announced by the BBC at the end of July. BBC Broadcast delivered a profit back to its parent company. So what you may ask? Well it's very likely that BBC Broadcast is th first BBC subsidiary in the last half dozen years to report a profit in its first year of operation. In these days of doom and gloom, in an industry seemingly in a downward spiral of despair, this performance is, at face value, excellent and will likely be a straw, grasped at by eternal optimists, looking for any sign of an upturn. Moreover, for those seeking green shoots, BBC Technology is about to relocate to what many agree is the most advanced digital broadcasting facility in Europe.
