Data is mushrooming: With every working day, there are more zeroes and ones in the world, queuing up to be stored. While some data is transient, the trend is towards keeping more data for longer. As broadcast companies digitise their back catalogue to exploit new market opportunities, they need to increase their data storage capacity to keep up. The only way to address the demand for data storage in the long run is to employ an information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy. This concerns the management of data from its creation through to its deletion so that it is stored on the cheapest appropriate storage medium, depending on how the data will need to be used.
