Whether it's tracing family roots, a fascination with ancient Rome or watching events from the Second World War in colour, consumer demand for the past is growing and as a result there are more hours of history programmes on TV than ever before. As well as the terrestrial channels, there is also an increasing market for historical documentaries with the History Channel (with 365 days of historical content to fill), Discovery and National Geographic - to mention but a few - searching for archive material.
