Pay-TV has, at least to date, dominated whatever 3DTV has been available. BSkyB in the UK, ESPN/DirecTV in the USA, Canal Plus in France, have each pioneered 3D transmissions, and each has focussed on sport and movies. Indeed, given that sport and movies are the backbone of any pay-TV system, that decision is not surprising. Sports channel ESPN, owned by Disney, has been the USA's 3DTV flag-carrier, showcasing a year's worth of top-flight entertainment in 3D, not least the US Masters golf, NBA games, the FIFA World Cup, the summer and winter extreme Games and all-star baseball. Their transmissions can be viewed by a staggering 65 million cable and satellite homes - provided the home owns a 3D set - plus subscribers to Verizon's FIOS DSL system. Much of ESPN's 3D output also ends up on Sky's 3D channel.
