Phytoplankton dynamics in a hypertrophic brackish lake in the South of France

The 'Etang de Bolmon' is a hypertrophic shallow lake in which high concentrations of DIN and SRP provide favourable conditions for the development of Cyanoprokaryota. This group dominates the phyto-plankton community all year, resulting in low diversity. P. agardhii, dominant the entire year, has a dynamic more consistent with observations from same latitudes (Spanish lakes) than with results from northern Europe. In these ecosystems, where solar radiation is intense and temperature high in summer, the maximum density is observed in spring. Moreover, in the Etang de Bolmon, winds can induce water inflow from the adjacent lagoon with a beneficial effect on diversity; Cyanoprokaryota density further decreases and stenohaline species appear.
