Determinants of Private School Attendance: Evidence from Wisconsin School Districts

This note explores the factors driving private school attendance in Wisconsin. Parents decide to send their children to private school for a variety of reasons. Some families choose private schooling for religious purposes. Other families might choose private schooling because of academics, such as a smaller learning environment or an alternative educational approach like Montessori education. Finally, given the importance of peer effects in education (Ding and Lehrer, ReStat, 2007), some families might choose private schooling in order to be able to select different peers for their children without having to move.
