Where is television going? This has to be the most difficult question asked in the past five years. In general, we know that television is going digital. But that doesn't seem to be the question, nor does it seem to fulfill our quest. We need a bigger answer, more meaty and full of implications, yet clear and enlightening. Rational as we are, let's at least narrow down the scope. Are we talking about terrestrial networks, program production or niche channels? But even all these elements do not represent the full spectrum which includes pay-TV, cable TV and satellite TV, home video and the Internet. So, is the future of television the future of all those windows, or does each element have its own destiny carved out? Do we have some point of historic reference from which we could get some perspective?
