The Effect of Health Care Financing on Health Care Outcome in Southern Africa Development Community (SADC): A Panel Data Analysis

The study examines the effect of private and public health expenditure on health care outcomes. Panel data for selected SADC member states was employed covering the period 1960 to 2014. Using the Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) the study supports a non-linear relationship between public health expenditure and health care outcomes. Health care outcomes are improved by enhancing both private and public expenditure on health while high HIV/AIDS prevalence worsens them. The study supports the notion that the quality of health care expenditure brings better health care outcomes than the quantity of expenditure. The study provides policy recommendations to improve health care outcomes in the SADC region.
