The history of modern Algeria remains a troubled one. In this masterful survey, Jonathan Hill examines in depth the legacy of French colonial rule in the region, from the bloody war of liberation (closer approximating, in some respects, a civil war - some 60,000 Muslim Algerians served in the French armed forces under the policies and debt rescheduling; at least 150,000 people lost their lives in the actual fighting, with some 5000-10,000 of them 'vanished' in Algerian police custody.
