A company which produces plastic disposable cups would have had to pay US$5.4 trillion in fines - more than the annual GDP of Japan - if it had lost a case over printing expired patent numbers on its products.rnLuckily for Solo Cup, the US appeals court upheld a decision which spared it from having to pay the eye-watering sum.rnThe case against Solo Cup was brought by patent attorney Matthew Pequignot in 2007 when he discovered that some of Solo Cup's products were marked with expired patent numbers.
