摘要

A patent troll is someone (or an entity) who does not make or sell a particular item or service, but who seeks to enforce patent rights against alleged infringers in an attempt to collect licensing fees. They will often gather up patents related to a certain company or companies, and then sue many defendants. Another type of troll is a company that previously produced a product, but now exists primarily by suing others. An example of a patent troll situation occurred in a battle over JPEG file technology. Named after its creator Joint Photographic Expert Group, the JPEG technology was intended to be free of license fee. However, in 2002, Forgent Networks mounted a patent attack. Forgent claimed it owned and planned to enforce patent rights on the JPEG technology, based on patent granted in 1987.
