ALEXIS ROCKMAN: A FABLE FOR TOMORROW

The term environmental art has multiple distinct meanings. It can refer to landscapes and other paintings in which the environment is dominant and people are a minor element. Think of Frederick Church and the Hudson River School or most of the works of Monet. Another meaning is art created in the environment out of elements of the environment. An example is Andy Goldsworthy, whose work was reviewed in this column several years ago. Rockman's environmental art belongs to a third group, paintings about the environment and what is happening to it. In particular, he is the surrealist of environmental art.
