In march 2000 petrochemicals industry executive Edward Neloe was summoned to Istana Merdeka, Indonesia's colonnaded neoclassical presidential palace in downtown Jakarta. There, newly elected Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid, frail and nearly blind, got straight to the point. "Do you want to run Bank Mandiri?" Wahid asked. "And if I appoint you, what will you do?" Neloe, a banker by trade who had been running Chandra Asri Petrochemical Center for two years, did not hesitate. "This is the largest bank in the country. I will use it as a vehicle to reintroduce the country to the world's capital markets," he declared, adding that he would upgrade Mandiri's technology platform and turn the giant corporate lender into a universal bank with a powerful consumer franchise. Two months later Neloe was named Bank Mandiri's new chief executive.
