Last month, when London-based fund manager Efficient Capital Structures demanded that Vodafone Group implement a series of management changes or return as much as £38 billion ($76 billion) to investors — citing concerns over the direction of the world's biggest mobile phone operator and its underper-forming share price — executives of the U.K.-based telecommunications company had little difficulty mounting a convincing rebuttal. Within 24 hours they responded point-by-point to ECS's concerns, employing a strategy they had already developed to quell investor anxiety. Analysts say the ECS resolutions, which will come up for a vote during the company's annual general meeting this month, have virtually no chance of passing, as a result of Vodafone's detailed and timely response.
