Privatization of voestalpine, an innovative steelmaker that is represented in over 60 countries, started in 1995, and by 2003, all government shares had been sold. Today, voestalpine (market cap at end-2008: €2.5 billion) is held 25 percent by long-term institutional investors, with the remaining 75 percent widely owned. For the year ended March 31, 2008, it reported €10.5 billion revenue, up 50.9 percent, and €1.8 billion EBITDA, up 35.2 percent. Shares closed out 2008 at €15.04, down nearly 70 percent from a year earlier but up 92 percent over five years.
