RECEDING SHADOWS

Regulators have been trying to get a grip on the shadow banking system - hedge funds, brokerages and other institutions that extend credit outside of the banking system - to guard against risks that could provoke another financial crisis. If size is anything to go by, the world may be a little safer. After more than doubling between 2002 and 2007, to some 867 trillion in assets, the shadow sector has largely gone sideways, according to the Basel, Switzerland-based Financial Stability Board.
