From artichokes to QA and back again

Interviewing Dr Mike Lock is a bit like trying to keep track of a firework. He keeps shooting off in unexpected and colourful directions. Our talk veered between his career, Jerusalem artichokes, his opinion of quality assurance (statistics gone mad), jazz and back to artichokes again, the whole continually punct- uated with a most infectious chuckle. Now Principal Research Officer and Head of the Industrial Physics Group at Cranfield University and Vice President of the BInstNDT, it may be heartening for those beginning a career in the field to know that his climb up the academic ladder got off to a distinctly wobbly start.
