U.S. officials are touting the Defense Department's more "assertive" posture in cyberspace following the release of a new Pentagon cyber strategy and the repeal of an Obama-era directive governing military cyber operations. DOD's new cyber policy recognizes the United States is in day-to-day competition with adversaries in cyberspace, and as a result, "the Department of Defense has been asked to become much more assertive in this space to be able to deter and disrupt those activities by nation states," Ed Wilson, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for cyber policy, said Oct. 30 during the Symantec cyber symposium in Washington.
