SHARP: QDR MULLING FUTURE U.S. MILITARY PRESENCE IN SOUTH KOREA

As part of the Quadrennial Defense Review, Defense Secretary Robert Gates is directing U.S. forces in South Korea to determine the number of American troops needed in the country over the next 20 years, said Army Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of United States Forces Korea.rnThe review should specify the future troop level from four different perspectives, Sharp told reporters at a Sept. 29 breakfast in Washington. Forces are needed to deter threats, build and rapidly execute current and future war plans, regionally engage and globally deploy, he noted.
