Defense Department Leaders Scrutinizing Efficiency Efforts

The Pentagon is conducting an audit of the $154 billion in efficiencies the military services and defense agencies identified last year and factored into their current five-year spending plans, a bid to track whether savings are materializing as originally forecast, according to defense officials. Robert Hale, the Pentagon comptroller, and Elizabeth McGrath, the deputy chief management officer, are leading the review which could produce an additional bill for the Defense Department to finance in fiscal year 2013 if efficiencies assumed last year as part of then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates' effort to find additional resources for modernization are not, in fact, panning out.
