Hagel Announces Major Defense Department Organizational Changes

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Nov. 4 he will overhaul and trim his office's bureaucracy while improving oversight of key policy matters like cyberwarfare, weapons of mass destruction and homeland defense. The changes -- driven both by fiscal pressure and statutory requirements to streamline Hagel's office -- will reorganize the Defense Department's policy shop; strengthen its chief management office; enhance oversight of business systems; keep DOD acquisition chief Frank Kendall in charge of buying information technology; and preserve DOD's net-assessment office as a distinct office while moving it under the policy chief, Hagel said.
