The United States should invest in a sufficiently sized fleet of warships based in the Asia-Pacific region to protect American interests tied to territorial disputes in the waters to China's south and east, according to the latest report by the congressional U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.The report makes the case that U.S. national security is tied up in a peaceful resolution of territorial conflicts involving China and its neighbors because of American "treaty commitments" and "forward-deployed presence." Consequently, U.S. officials should have at least 60 ships operating in the region and transfer 60 percent of homeports there by 2020, the traditionally hawkish commission recommends in its Nov. 20 report.
