Amos: USMC Could Lose 8,000 Marines If Sequestration Isn't Undone

The Marine Corps has a detailed plan to handle a decade of sequestration cuts that includes cutting about 8,000 Marines from infantry battalions, aviation squadrons, headquarters, logistics units and more, according to the service's commandant. On June 26, Gen. James Amos told the Defense Writers Group that the Marine Corps has figured out what the force would look like if sequestration cuts continue to be imposed on the military. The service, already drawing down from a height of about 202,000 Marines to 182,000 because of Budget Control Act cuts, would be reduced by an additional 8,000 Marines to bring the force to 174,000.
