摘要

THE TERM 'APPALACHIA' has varied meanings. From a strict geologic/ geographic standpoint, the Appalachian Mountains runs south by southwest from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada through Quebec, down through the New England states (Northern Appalachians). From there they continue through southwestern New York state through Pennsylvania, southeastern Ohio, West Virginia and western Virginia and though the western Carolinas (Central Appalachians). They come to an end all the way down through the northern parts of Alabama (Southern Appalachians). Culturally, it is most common to refer to the Central and Southern regions as Appalachia.
