NAVAIR Adjusting To How Workforce Will Handle Civilian Furloughs

Naval Air Systems Command is spending the first two weeks of June developing plans for how it will handle operations during the Defense Department's civilian furlough period, according to a NAVAIR official. On May 14, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that DOD civilian employees would be furloughed 11 days starting July 18. The move is needed because of the budget cuts the department imposed as a result of sequestration. NAVAIR put together a team from its four major commands, with one representative from its headquarters; one from the aircraft division; one from the weapons division; one from the fleet readiness centers; as well as one program executive officer and one deputy PEO. This team evaluated the best way to handle furloughs for both the employee and the mission, Garry Newton, NAVAIR commander, said during a June 5 sequestration update.
