DOD Completes Pair Of Major Mobility Capability Studies

The Defense Department has completed and delivered to Congress a pair of new major mobility studies assessing the adequacy of the military's cargo aircraft and cargo ship inventories to execute the current defense strategy. On Nov. 14, 2013, Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, provided two classified appraisals of the U.S. military's global reach - the Mobility Capabilities Assessment for 2018 and the Mobility Requirements and Capabilities Study, according to a Pentagon spokesman. Cmdr. William Urban, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a Feb. 7 email that unclassified summaries are not available. The Mobility Capabilities Assessment for 2018 was commissioned in May 2012 by the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, part of an effort to review mobility capabilities through 2018 in support of the 2012 defense strategy codified by the Obama administration that January.
