Pentagon Closely Examining 3-D Printing Benefits, Security Concerns

The Pentagon is closely examining the benefits and security concerns related to 3-D printing -- a possible game changer whose potential has not yet been fully harnessed by the department, a senior defense official said. Elana Broitman, acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for manufacturing and industrial base policy, said using 3-D printing could be a great cost saver especially when it comes to replacing broken parts while at sea or in a remote location. However, 3-D printing comes with a number of security concerns, including some related to cybersecurity, she said at a Jan. 21 event at the Austrian Embassy organized by the National Defense Industrial Association.
