MDA optimizing Aegis for new AMDR-equipped Flight Ⅲ destroyers

The Missile Defense Agency is laying the groundwork for a major enhancement of the nation's sea-based ballistic missile defense capability: The development of a new variant of the Aegis Weapon System optimized for the Navy's most advanced guided-missile destroyer. The Flight Ⅲ DDG-51 will be armed with the new Air and Missile Defense Radar, the most powerful sensor of its kind in the Aegis fleet. On June 7, MDA published a notice announcing plans to commence development of the new Aegis Weapon System Ballistic Missile Defense Capability - dubbed Aegis BMD Baseline 6 - beginning in fiscal year 2017. The purpose of the notice is to seek feedback from any company that believes it might have the capability to unseat incumbent Lockheed Martin, which began the Aegis program in 1969, and since 2003 has developed the ballistic missile defense capability. The company owns proprietary technical data associated with the system.
