The method involves determining flight route from a starting point to a target point and flight altitude (102) based on performance data of an airplane, non-meteorological data (107) e.g. navigation data, and meteorological data (106). A potentially integrated radiation drive value is determined (103) for the flight route and the flight altitude based on the meteorological data and predetermined engine emission data. Reference-flight route and reference-flight altitude are determined (104) by varying the flight route and the flight altitude such that the radiation drive value is minimized. The meteorological data consists of three-dimensional air temperature data, three-dimensional air humidity sensor, three-dimensional air pressure data, or three-dimensional wind data. An independent claim is also included for a device for automatic determination of climate-optimized reference-flight route and reference flight altitude.
