The Defense Department's inspector general has officially opened an investigation into "assertions" made by a former United Launch Alliance executive about the Pentagon's treatment of the Boeing-Lockheed Martin joint venture. "At the request of the Secretary of Defense, the OIG DOD has opened an investigation regarding assertions made by United Launch Alliance's (ULA) former vice-president of engineering relating to competition for national security space launch and whether contracts to ULA were awarded in accordance with DOD and federal regulations," reads a March 22 memo from Randolph Stone, the deputy inspector general for policy and oversight, to Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James and Frank Kendall, the Pentagon's acquisition executive.
